Sapiens

By Yuval Noah Harari

32 Page Points

In his enthralling tome, Yuval Harari sweeps through the entire history of the universe to discuss where we came from, how we got here, and what might be next. This masterpiece covers cycles on an epochal scale—epochcycles, super-dupercycles, megacycles (are those words? They are now). From the big bang through the formation of fundamental forces and key elements of matter, coalescence of planets, evolution of life, emergence of societies, and the exponential explosion of technology, this dense book charts humanity’s evolution from unremarkable apes to planetary dominators.

Harari’s central insight is that our success stems from a unique ability to believe in shared fictions—money, nations, religions, corporations—that allow millions of strangers to cooperate. For investors, his analysis of how money evolved from shared fiction into the ultimate social technology is particularly relevant, enabling complex economic systems that transcend our tribal boundaries.

The book offers deep insights into ourselves and everyone around us, showing how cognitive, agricultural, and scientific revolutions fundamentally altered human organization. Harari’s exploration of how we learned to think in abstract concepts—from counting sheep to calculating derivatives—illuminates why financial markets exist at all.

Harari’s perspective invites reflection at both the micro and macro levels, prompting frequent pauses as you absorb the weight of his insights. For example, humans are the only primate that can organize in large groups. While other primate groups begin fighting and splintering as their populations grow in size (around 140 individuals seems to be the max), humans create cities of 30+ million people that cooperate in functioning societies.  That depth, along with Harari’s extensive research, makes the pace slow but joyful. Fair warning: the insights gleaned create the risk you’ll become a total bore at parties, regaling fellow guests with keen observations from your studies. Well, a bore to those who haven’t read it—fellow Sapiens readers will probably be as engaged as you.

What is a page point?

If you pull a random book off our shelf, chances are you’ll see little copper marks peeking out along the page edges. These are page points—thin copper bookmarks we’ve used for years to mark passages that make us stop and think. We’ll be honest: it’s a rare occasion when we actually go back to flip through those marked pages. But we couldn’t live without them. There’s something about physically marking a moment when an author makes you see the world differently, even if you never revisit it. Think of them as our real-time reading scorecard—the more page points, the more the book made us pause, question, or marvel.
