Breakneck

By Dan Wang

7 Page Points

Technology analyst Dan Wang spent nearly a decade living and working in China, and Breakneck distills those experiences into a simple but powerful observation: America is increasingly governed by lawyers, while China is increasingly governed by engineers. It is a framework that risks sounding overly simplistic, but Wang supports it with reporting from Shanghai, Chongqing, and Shenzhen, where the engineering mindset has helped produce both extraordinary economic development and some of the most controversial aspects of modern Chinese governance.

Wang argues that China’s growth and its authoritarian tendencies are not contradictions. Instead, they are manifestations of the same instinct. The engineer seeks to optimize systems, remove obstacles, and maximize efficiency. That mindset has enabled China to build high-speed rail networks, manufacturing capacity, and infrastructure at a pace that would be difficult to imagine in most Western countries. It has also enabled policies and surveillance systems that many observers find deeply troubling.

For investors, one of the book’s most valuable contributions is its explanation of why China’s manufacturing dominance may persist. The traditional explanation focused on cheap labor. Wang suggests a different answer: a system capable of mobilizing capital, coordinating resources, and clearing obstacles quickly. Whether one agrees with the broader argument or not, it provides a useful lens for evaluating global supply chains, industrial policy, infrastructure spending, and long-term economic competitiveness.

The book is not without weaknesses. Wang’s reporting inside China is detailed and persuasive, but his treatment of the United States is less developed. Readers may find themselves wanting a more balanced examination of the strengths and weaknesses of both systems. There is also an unresolved question beneath the central thesis: is China’s speed a product of culture and governance, or is it simply the natural behavior of a country still moving through an earlier stage of development? Wang raises the question but never fully answers it.

That ambiguity is ultimately what makes Breakneck worthwhile. Rather than offering a prediction, the book provides a framework for thinking about one of the most important economic and geopolitical questions of our time. Investors spend enormous effort evaluating companies but often spend far less time evaluating the systems in which those companies operate. Breakneck is a reminder that those systems may be just as important as the businesses themselves.

What is a page point?

If you pull a random book off our shelf, chances are you’ll see little copper marks peeking out along the page edges. These are page points—thin copper bookmarks we’ve used for years to mark passages that make us stop and think. We’ll be honest: it’s a rare occasion when we actually go back to flip through those marked pages. But we couldn’t live without them. There’s something about physically marking a moment when an author makes you see the world differently, even if you never revisit it. Think of them as our real-time reading scorecard—the more page points, the more the book made us pause, question, or marvel.
