Today in the Market (4/8/2024)

Good Morning! On Monday, U.S. equities concluded with few fluctuations as investors started a significant week that would include evaluating new inflation data to assess the likelihood of interest rate cuts as well as the commencement of the first quarter earnings season. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones decreased by around 0.03%, while the Nasdaq barely finished up by 0.03%.

The Biden administration announced its intention to provide Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSM) with federal grants of up to $6.6 billion. This funding is in conjunction with TSM’s $25 billion expansion project in Arizona, which will establish a third TSMC fabrication facility in that state.

What is the purpose of the grant? The grants will be used to finance the ongoing construction of two manufacturing facilities that TSMC is already developing in the Phoenix area. Additionally, the company declared its intention to construct a third facility at the same site in the coming years. By the end of the decade, all three facilities are expected to be operational and manufacturing TSMC’s most advanced processors. Some of the facilities even aspire to produce circuits that are even more complex than those currently available by utilizing an upcoming 2-nanometer fabrication process.

The big picture! As an additional significant grant announcement in the last three weeks, this agreement represents a component of President Joe Biden’s endeavor to recommence advanced semiconductor production in the U.S. For example, Biden announced in March that the U.S. would provide Intel (INTC) with up to $8.5 billion in grants over the coming years to support a variety of new initiatives in Arizona, Ohio, New Mexico, and Oregon.

Tech companies like OpenAI have extensively collected online material in their aggressive pursuit of data to train advanced AI systems. However, according to the WSJ, experts caution that there may be a full depletion of high-quality data, such as Wikipedia pages and research publications, within the next two years.

However, there is a new source of data… OpenAI has created a technology capable of transcribing audio from YouTube videos, providing access to a fresh data source that potentially infringes on the copyrights of these videos, but Google did not express any objection to it. Why not? According to the New York Times, Google (GOOG, GOOGL) is covertly transcribing YouTube videos to support its own AI models as well

There’s more… Due to the scarcity of human-generated material available for scraping, several firms are said to be in the process of creating “synthetic” information. This entails using AI to generate material that will then be used to teach the very same AI.
